Riot Baby was heavy but also cemented in family ties and love.
Onyebuchi knows how to write stories that incorporate scenery, emotions, and strugle; yet there is contained within this story endurance, strength and the Black experience.
In a world where augments are real, the surveillance and order that corporations and 'the man' wants is very much alive and Black bodies are once again the target. Ella has 'a thing', but because of the reality that they inhabit, her mother fears for her safety and freedom if discovered and actively encourages Ella to suppress that inherent power. Guess how that goes.
Kev, Ella's younger brother is a victim of the system and experiences incarceration while awaiting trial. He goes through all the horrors of the broke justice system and what it takes to survive behind bars. It is his bond with his sister and a slight tingling of there being more that keeps him going.
It's raw and powerful, another novella that packs the punch of a novel.
