This novella is very emotional. The main focus on Elle and Kev and the brutalities and injustice they experience and they witness. It shows a lot of the struggles of incarcerated people and POC, especially Black people.
Though I kind of would have liked to see the sci-fi/fantasy elements in this story explored a bit more, I also liked that it stayed focused on the raw anger and heartbreak. A hard sci-fi or fantasy approach might've distracted from the real life issues this story.

I listened to the audio book. It was confusing when perspectives would change between Keven and Ella. 

The characters in this book are angry and passionate. It was hard to listen to at times. I empathized a lot with them. 

I don't know If I liked the mix of fantastical and sci-fi elements. But dang is Ella OP!!

This book left me simmering with anger and rage and indignance and despair, but in a way that I think I needed. Like Sarah Gailey said on the cover, it "comes at you full speed with the brake line cut". It leaves my heart heavy and lights a fire in it at the same time. It is definitely not a light read and please heed the content warnings.
