This memoir does what the best of them do: I now feel like I know who Elvira is. Yours Cruelly, Elvira is a fearless tell-all of both a life of showbiz and a tireless journey into the spotlight and acceptance. The narrative covers 70 years of her life and is candidly thorough. This book is also fantastically queer throughout and should be read by both horror fans and lovers of queer memoirs. Check the content warnings though.

I chose to listen to the audiobook because Cassandra Peterson read it herself. I really don't know if there could be a better way to experience it, if possible. Elvira does the voices, like all great storytellers. Loved it and love her.

Meh. I loved Elvira growing up. I remember watching her campy shows and loving her sassy ways. I didn’t really have expectations for this, but I feel it was a wasted audible credit; I ended up fast forwarding through the last several chapters.

I knew about the legal battles re: Vampira, but I thought the manner in which it was presented here was petty and juvenile.

CW: sexual assault

The part that really made me mad was chapter 15, in which she is recounting some experiences of sexual assault. Trying to illustrate what it’s like to be a woman always on edge about men, she uses an example of a man being home and a plumber coming to the house for a service call. She sets the scene that your minding your own business, making small talk, being polite by offering a drink…then the next thing you know you’re being attacked. She says - and I quote - “…because a) we all know this would never ever happen with a woman as a perpetrator, and if it did it would be the fantasy come true for most guys, and 2) in general, only another man can be bigger and stronger than you and make you feel like you don’t have a fighting chance. So do you get it now?”

Maybe it’s just me, but that seems like a gross sweeping generalization that can be harmful to make people of any gender come forward if they’ve experienced abuse.
