Yeahhh, not sure what the rave is all about on this one. It not bad but I don't think it's an original story line.
The fact though that real people deal with this type of daily treatment by police is beyond reproach. The fact that cops mostly get away without punishment makes it exponentially infuriating. White people cannot understand. There's no way they can.
I attended demonstrations in Baltimore for Freddie Gray & went down to where the police in riot gear were stationed & I witnessed first hand how the media twisted the story. It was a peaceful protest & no one leading these events called for violence of any kind. I did see the occasional rebel trying to instigate but the crowds shut that down immediately. In this book, the cops tried to twist Star's testimony by suggesting/baiting. How is this allowed to happen?!
I don't have the answer for this broken system but cops are held to higher standards by their position alone & should be punished to the full extent, and while under investigation no paid leave. I mean WTAF.

LOVED this novel. Love, love, love is all I have for it. The narration is incredible and it really shows the straddling of two the separate worlds Starr navigates through each day. It is a smart commentary on the world we live in today.
This was a powerful and realistic portrayal of race, class, and violence in the US, and gives an opportunity for those of us who don't live this experience on a daily basis to better understand what it means and feels like to code-switch and navigate the political nuances of families and communities.

There's that word again. Bravery. Brave peoples' legs don't shake. Brave people don't feel like puking. Brave people sure don't have to remind themselves how to breathe if they think about that night too hard. If bravery is a medical condition, everybody's misdiagnosed me.
hun, that is the very definition of bravery. feeling the fear, and doing it anyway

A story seldom told from a voice rarely heard, "The Hate U Give" (aka THUG) has a powerful lesson to share about walking a mile in someone else's shoes. The teenage girl who lives in a tough neighborhood, is sent to a mainly white private school by her parents who want her to have a chance, witnesses not one but two murders of close friends. Sadly, her unimaginable trauma is all too common among her neighbors, family and friends. I'm excited to hear that a movie is being made, not only because it's a highly cinematic book, but also because it's a story that deserves as wide an audience as possible.
