by far the most important and most relevant book i’ll ever read in my entire life.
This was an eye-opening, thought provoking story. Sometimes we think we see things as they are, but we miss the bigger picture. That's what I found with this book. I was missing a lot. The daily struggles. Situations I take for granted because of the color of my skin. This book dug into those things and made me pause and think about how it must feel to live it every single day. I saw a parallel between a recent event in the news and something that occurred in the book. No spoiler, but I will say it was quite striking to make the connection. Highly recommend this important and necessary novel.
Wow. I didn’t know I needed this book until I read it. Made me look at things from a different perspective and realize how from small to big problems can impact to a lot of people, even communities. It educated me. I highly recommend it.

Este libro entra en la lista de mis relecturas que siguen pegando como la primera vez. La narrativa no es nada del otro mundo y sinceramente el estilo no es más que simple, aun así, es demasiado fuerte porque hace una cosa de manera perfecta: te da sentimientos.
Todo el propósito de este libro, la manera en la que engloba un problema y te lo tira desde todos lados es lo que vale la pena. La lucha es seria, por supuesto, pero me gusta mucho que da ese toque en una protagonista adolescente. No por ser joven no eres capaz de comprender el problema y luchar contra ello. El desarrollo de Starr representa a todos los jóvenes que alguna vez fuimos/somos/seremos, luchando contra lo que tratan de imponernos.
Los personajes y el ambiente del libro se establecen muy bien en la realidad, porque es una realidad lo que este libro cuenta.

a very impactful story, but i couldn’t help but think how many Black stories are only amplified when violence or injustice occurs. (please watch American Fiction to understand my pov—it’s so good). but starr was a standout throughout the book. looking forward to reading the sequel!

So I was warned that I might cry and those that warned were correct. It is a valuable look through the eyes of a young woman that is walking between the reality of what she has witnessed, the white world she lives in for her education and the world she exists in the rest of the time. I hope that we will some day NOT have to have separate worlds. But we are not there. I hope people will read this to help gain more perspective on what is still happening today.
