beautiful and magical obviously. i think what i liked the most was the different romantic relationships and how they differed. would highly recommend anyone who enjoyed this to read catherynne m valente's radiance, its is 10x more convoluted and fantastical but has some similar themes and overall is just a really good read for anyone who enjoys reading about alternate old hollywood and women in cinema

DNF... This was a "no plot mostly vibes" book and the vibes weren't enough to keep me reading. Luli isn't very compelling and it all just felt like a shallow "girlboss slay!" moment

pretty enjoyable for me! I liked that the faerie elements weren't presented straightforwardly--it was confusing in a way that enhanced the story. I found it more confusing with some of the Hollywood stuff being totally fictional versus less fictional.

Having not liked the Chosen and the Beautiful by the same author, I was pleasantly surprised when I started loving this book! I think this one is much more up my alley. Vo does such a wonderful job depicting Hollywood in a magical setting where I felt the metaphors to real Hollywood were aplenty. There is so much intersectionality portrayed well with Luli being visibly Chinese American, queer, and a woman. I loved her as a character. I also loved the descriptions of the magic. I would read a thousand more books like this if they existed!

Every so often you find a book that you needed to be in the world, and it lives completely up to what you didn't know you were looking for. This one of those books for me. Sumptuous, poetic, rich with imagined detail and magic realism, this world feels so true you believe in it, and like any world, you want to live in it and you fear it at the same time.
