One Sentence Review: Quick question - can I give a book a standing ovation?
3.5/5
The Siren Queen was an interesting read, The first part was written well and was a great introduction for the main character. The fantasy was written all over the place and sometimes made no sense there wasn't an explanation for or at least other characters' reactions to the magic and creatures. The second part of the book was okay it was hard to push through and I felt myself becoming more and more confused with what was going on. My favorite part was the third half of this book, it finally started to pick up the pace and go somewhere.
I really enjoyed Luli's relationships and the different types of women she fell in love with and she was a great main character, I think the characters were what really helped me finish this book I just wished that some of the things that happen could be explained or make any sense because it just feels like random stuff happens with no explanation ex. the fire that killed Harry, the whole ending chapter with Greta and her lover, and the whole Oberlin Wolfe character.
My favorite parts of this book would definitely be the ending chapters, how the final kiss in the siren queen changed film history and was the first lesbian kiss scene of that time, and how we see through Lulis eyes how that impacted her and the people around her.
I think maybe in a few months I'll give the Siren Queen another read.

Great… Gowns, beautiful gowns.
The premise for this was great! The prose is beautiful on a sentence level, but it’s all frosting, no cake.

Really enjoyable book - delightful as an audiobook. I think I enjoyed it more than the paperback.

Interesting read, but nothing really stood out for me though. The plotting was vague, a mix of old Hollywood and magical realism that wasn’t terribly well defined. The characters were well developed and writing was lyrical almost. Despite the good writing and interesting plot premise, I had a hard time staying engaged while reading and found myself skimming chapters too much. Not bad overall, but mostly meh for me 🤷🏼♀️
