So very many good ideas, but so little purpose to them. There's great worldbuilding with studio heads as otherworldly entities granting power to stars, a strange faerie realm of weekend fireside rambles, literal stars formed when an actor reaches a supernatural pinnacle. But for all that, none of it amounts to much. There's no rhyme or reason, and the Siren Queen doesn't seem like a destined star in any case--she's making schlocky mermaid movies facing off against Captain Nemo. It's just not what I hoped for, and it shows that it's Vo's first book written.

I liked the unique concept of other worldly creatures. Maybe because this is the third book I've read with a moviestar main character, I feel bored. I can hardly remember what I read but I did know I enjoyed what I understood. My favorite character disappeared halfway in the book

A great concept that intertwines magic and old Hollywood in very clever ways. Tying together the fact that Hollywood studios renamed their actors to fae magic and the power of names was probably my favorite bit of world building. It definitely dragged for me in the middle and personally I was wishing for a more straightforward exploration of the main character’s rise to stardom than the more disconnected exploration of the world. And the magic is a bit hard to grasp at times. But the parts that worked for me I did really enjoy.
