Just not the writing style I vibed with. It was a little confusing what was poetic language and what was actually happening.

I respect Nghi Vo for her craft so much, but this just wasn't my cup of tea. The fantasy elements are mesmerizing, the writing is pitch-perfect, and the symbolisms and commentary Vo makes for and on queerness, Chinese-American identity, and the entertainment industry are compelling, but after about the halfway mark I found myself growing disinterested in the story.

My first Nghi Vo after this sat on my shelf for way too long, but I finally picked up the audiobook for it and was thrilled to see it's read by Natalie Naudus. Loved the immersive prose, wow can Nghi Vo create an atmosphere! While this was a bit slow paced, I didn't mind at all, I just enjoyed being in this weird magical world and seeing where the characters went. I didn't always follow the magic, but I like that magical realism forces me to let go a bit and I think it was done so well here. I will definitely be reading more by this author.

I picked up this book to read once before and I immediately rejected it for a reason I can’t remember. Picking it up this time around, Nghi Vo immediately devoured me. The fantastical prose is captivating in a weird but wonderful way. I loved the monster of a main character and her claw to the top.
I believe some books want us to read them at the proper time and will reject us until we’re in the right mindset or place in life. I am glad to have this book accept me this time.
