Pure Katie O'Neill! Soft, adorable, sweet, loving, earnest, gentle, gorgeous illustrations. Lana's grieving her mom and her dad doesn't really get what she needs... but he's not a villain, just going through his own process of grief. Auntie Mae is a straight-up hottie willing to listen and learn and earns her the right to get back together with her unicorn-riding mermaid in the end. All of this plus a handy message about environmental interconnectedness, fixing mistakes, and sustainability!

tl;dr: QUEER, MER-UNICORN-RIDING MERMAIDS. A perfect gift for all the queer moms with young kiddos in your life. They'll honestly not even know what hit them.

A lovely book

A lovely little book that covers loss of family and place. I found it handled the matter of a loss within a family very well in a mindful manner that even young kids could understand. The book also covers how the loss of coral reefs effects the people and environment. Highlighting both sides of the issue is very rare in both adult and kid books and was a welcome addition. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised the issue was dumbed down but I still feel like the ending wasn’t very realistic in how everything “worked out” and worries about the future were dismissed easily. A small note as well, the aunt litters at the beginning of the book, which I felt was an ironic event for this book. I would say this is a good book for younger kids who like fantasy creatures, the ocean, and to learn about family loss or to learn how to sympathize with family loss.

Why is Kay O'Neill so fantastic? They were able to create a story with so many beautiful messages including becoming one's own guardian, loving yourself and the planet, and environmentalism! This is a great book to use to talk to kids (and adults) about climate change and environmental protection.

Very cute and sweet. It didn't wow me as much as O'Neil's other works, but I still enjoyed it. As always the art is beautiful. I can honestly just stare at the pictures and be happy.
