Book 3 I think has a good balance of action and character development. Thalia being the main new character introduction. She is just as proud and leader worthy as Percy, but between the two they haven't figured out where they fit. Tension between Percy and Thalia that is comparable to his relationship with Clarisse without as much anger to fully cloud judgement. Through learning more about Thalia, I believe that Percy grows a lot as a person. I liked their interactions and found them often very sweet. Grover is in this one, on the quest this time, and he's still as funny as ever. Still my favorite character. Annabeth's development in book 2 comes to fruition more so in this story. We also have the introduction of a few new gods/goddesses, new monsters, and a few more loveable characters. One I didn't expect at all but in hindsight, should have seen coming. I liked that twist.
The series as a whole is a fun read, particularly when trying to figure out which god, goddess, or other mythical being Rick Riordan has hidden into the everyday common and exactly how. Brings a smile to my face when I recognize a bit from other media, but with his unique, witty twist. This time

Wow, Nico I- I had a feeling __ was his godly parent and I was correct. WOW, just if Luke gets a hold of him I will not be happy.
(I put a __ because I didn't want to spoil it 🙂)

While it definitely has its flaws, the book is still a great deal of fun and it's fun rereading it to see things that come back in later books to the story's advantage. I had forgotten how quickly Bianca joined up with the hunters and Artemis upon meeting them. It was almost instant. But now, rereading it, I also recognize how parentified Bianca was with Nico and I don't entirely blame her for making that choice. I do wish Bianca had been a little more fleshed out before her story ended. I actually think all of the female characters in this book could have used more in-depth character study with the exception of Zoe who I think was very well explored for the brief amount of time we have her.
It's also fun to see Percy start to mature emotionally as he moves closer to an older teen, and the prophecy. Obviously I know where things are going having read these before, but it's still fun appreciating the slow growth of characters.
I definitely recommend these books to other readers, though I do recommend starting with The Lightning Thief. Don't jump in on this one. You will very much be lost if you do.
Trigger warnings for this book include death of side characters and the usual PG-13 sword fighting with monsters.
