Sanshiro is the story of the titular character's time in Tokyo as a university student and the relationships he develops. Sanshiro is a naive, country boy, out of place in the ego-centric, increasingly Westernized Tokyo. There isn't a particular plot that is tying everything together: Sanshiro is a bildungsroman.
I enjoyed the subtly of Sanshiro's slow change over the course of the novel. He eventually understands the true nature other individuals in his life, Yojiro, Professor Hirota, and Mineko, when at the beginning he was truly bewildered. I think Sanshiro's experiences ring true for almost everyone and that is what makes this story so wonderful.
Sanshiro is less intense than Kokoro. However, the character development and their emotional interplay makes Sanshiro just as engrossing. Sanshiro is a self-assuming, lovable character, trying to understand his emotions and leave his rural heritage behind. Just as in Kokoro, the main character has self-doubt about the others around him.
I really liked Haruki Murakami's introduction in the edition I wrote insightful, so if you are a Murakami fan, you may want to read the intro to gain some perspective.

Okê so cuốn sách có mùi giống Tender Is The Night của Fitzgerald, nói về cái đám dilettantes của xã hội giao thời, bùng nổ văn hóa. Nói chung là bao trùm đủ mọi khía cạnh của fine arts như kiểu 9 cái sở trường của 9 bà Muses trong Greek Myth. É nì quầy thì thằng nhân vật chính Sanshiro từ quê nghèo lên phố lớn Tokyo melting pot sầm uất bắt gặp những cái xa hoa đa dạng lần đầu. Rồi bắt đầu gặp người Tokyo "quá quen với mặt đất thênh thang nên thành ra quá thực lòng", "như dòng suối nhỏ lòng hẹp nên nước cứ chảy xuống mà không gì đọng lại", ở đây ai cũng biết nhiều quá, người ta nhìn thấu nó, rồi nó sợ. Nó thích con nhỏ kia người Tokyo, con nhỏ đó cũng thích nó, vì nhỏ đó thấy hai đứa như 2 chú cừu lạc, không biết tới đâu về đâu, nhưng mà thằng này nhát gái, nhát lòng người, xong nhỏ này move on bỏ thằng này lại. Truyện không có kết cụ thể, cuối cùng chỉ có cái cảm giác hơi mông lung vô định mà con người ta hay gặp phải mỗi khi thay đổi môi trường. Truyện không chỉ nhắc tới cái social movement mà còn là cái ethical movement khi mà chủ nghĩa cá nhân lên, thì sự ích kỷ cũng lên. Người ta mở facebook lên comment một dòng "xã hội thật là đáng sợ" thế là thành người của chính nghĩa. Đi ngang qua đã để lại 1 trái tim thế là thành người tốt. Facebook nó xoa hơi êm vô cái phần đó của mỗi người, cái phần self-rewarding mechanism born out of individualism. Đọc rồi sẽ thấy có những đoạn đám dilettantes này bình phẩm về người nghèo, về hoàn cảnh người khác nghe rất vui tai. Thực sự thì những mảnh đời ngoài kia dù họ có tồi có tàn thì họ vẫn ráng vươn lên. Ông tài xế grab trong bộ dạng xấu nhất chở thằng học sinh trong bộ dạng đẹp nhất đi tới 1 quán trà sữa. Những cảnh tượng như thế này, thực sự không ai cần bình phẩm. Họ chỉ làm những gì họ phải làm. Nhớ có vụ một ông nhiếp ảnh gia nào chụp ảnh 1 đứa trẻ ốm đói cạnh 1 con kền kền thế là đoạt giải Pulitzer xong tự tử. Ổng làm như thế vì ổng bị cắn rứt lương tâm, cái lương tâm của một con người hiểu ra rằng người ta không cần thoughts, prayers and commentaries. Người ta cần actual changes. Ổng tự tử vì sau cùng đứa trẻ đó cũng đâu ấm no lên được, và vì ổng thấy sợ rằng sự đau khổ của nó lại trở thành một thức nghệ thuật cho đám professional kia. Ban đầu mình nghĩ cuốn này hợp với đám sv năm nhất như mình, bỡ ngỡ về đời, tập tễnh về người. Nhưng giờ mình nhận ra, cuốn này ai cũng có phần, ai trong cái xã hội hiện đại tràn-ngập-tình-thương này cũng có phần.

Natsume Soseki è sempre dotato di una delicatezza stupefacente. Dalle pagine di questo libro emergono perfettamente un senso di pacatezza, un atmosfera particolare di un dato periodo storico e una consapevolezza di come sia un certo periodo della vita di un ragazzo. Sanshiro è un ragazzo puro e provinciale a contatto per la prima volta con un realtà diversa, non solo geograficamente con il contrasto campagna-città ma anche in un certo senso storicamente diversa, come se nella capitale il tempo fosse passato più in fretta e Sanshiro si trovasse a contatto con persone che rispetto a lui vivono già in un futuro che lui può solo guardare e a cui non sa come accostarsi. E' reso molto bene il fatto che nonostante Sanshiro sia il protagonista non sia lui il motore del romanzo: Sanshiro si limita a osservare e viene mosso più dalle circostanze e dalle altre persone che da se stesso.

Şimdiye kadar Japon edebiyatından okuduğum en güzel romanlardan biriydi Sanşiro.
Dönemini böylesi güzel anlatan bir eser okumak çok etkileyici. Batı etkisinde kalmaya başlayan bir doğu ülkesi olarak Japonya'nın nasıl bir geçiş sürecinde olduğunu hiç düşünmemiştim. Bu süreci, köyden Tokyo'ya üniversite okumak için giden bir genç üzerinden anlatıyor olması Batılı gözden değil de saf bir Doğulu gözden bakmasını sağlıyor okurun sürece. Sanşiro'nun bilime, felsefeye ve bunlara dair uzun naralar atıp aralara İngilizce kelimeler serpiştiren insanları köylü olduğu için anlamadığını düşünmesi Türk edebiyatında sıklıkla konuştuğumuz "Yanlış Batılılaşma"yı getirdi aklıma. Sanşiro roman boyu sevdiği kadının onunla köylü olduğu için alay ettiğini düşünmesi roman boyu -aslında hiçbir konuda- hayatını tamamlamak için yeterli adımları atmasının zor olduğunu gösteriyor. Ki bu açıdan gerçekliğine, samimiyetine inanması en kolay karakterlerden, dolayısıyle en başarılı kitaplardan biriydi.
Ayrıca kitabın çevirmeni Alper Kaan Bilir'i nasıl tebrik etsem azdır. Neredeyse her sayfadaki dipnotlarıyla ve kitabın önsözünde Natsume Sõseki'nin kitapta anlattığı dönemdeki sosyo-ekonomik durumu anlatmasıyla beni kendisine hayran bıraktı. Zira sayesinde kitabı okumak daha keyifli, daha doyurucu hale geldi.

i really enjoyed this book. it contained the same Sōseki humour that i loved so much in ‘Botchan’, though this novel was more structured with clear themes.
loved this delightful little read. nothing major happens, no large drama, just a true to life little snippet of growing up and being thrust into a new, different environment.
