I very much enjoyed this book! It was a bit on the fluffier side in certain chapters, but most of it was packed with action. And tragedy. A lot of tragedy.
I felt like the impact could have been greater if

we'd actually got to know the characters whose "misdeeds" were revealed better beforehand. As it is, it's just one annoying character having an affair with someone we've never heard of before (unless I've forgotten...)

. I think that the twist with the merchant lady was refreshingly surprising. The great tragedy of so many people, and especially uninvolved innocents, dying came across... well, nicely is the wrong word... Mo Ran's introspection was also well done, as were his considerations on Bad Guy Nr 1 (I assume)'s motivations and history.
Of course, I also very much appreciated the developement in the last chapters! Excited to see where the story goes from here!
I also felt like it could have been better handled

when the person who lived as a boy for their whole adolescence and adult life is revealed to actually have female genitalia and suddenly, the boy becomes a girl? It just felt like a jarring shift. But maybe the other books go a bit more into detail about that, as well as clarifying the character's actual preference.
