The date of the marriage between Rufeng Sect's Nangong Si and the Butterfly Bone Beauty Beast Song Qiutong is fast approaching, and everyone has gathered for the festivities. But a mysterious interrupter throws the wedding into chaos, and it's quickly followed by an even greater scheme being put into action. Mo Ran and Chu Wanning are dragged into the fray and once again face off against the unknown enemy who they met years ago and has since eluded them. All the while, their affection for each other continues to grow and threatens to overwhelm them both. As Mo Ran especially struggles to keep his true feelings hidden, he begins to wonder if he even should...
Although I had little emotional investment in Nangong Si and Ru Feng Sect's affairs, this volume had me completely engrossed. So many secrets are unearthed, and I found myself sympathizing with a character I had previously thought to be annoying and arrogant. And, of course, I loved all the sweet, intimate moments between Mo Ran and Chu Wanning. Just like their emotions threatened to bubble over, I felt the frustration and anticipation in myself well up and nearly burst as the book went on. Normally, I don't like long, overly flowery descriptions of passion, but when it comes from Mo Ran or Chu Wanning, it makes my heart swell and ache for them. Mo Ran's transformation from book one to this fifth volume is also one of the most drastic and arresting that I've ever read. I was very happy with how this installment ended and I can't wait to continue the story and spend more time with these characters that are so full of depth and complexity.
