Super cute and easy! Looking forward to reading others if the kids are into it. :)

Pancake loving Nate receives a call from his friend Annie whose piece of artwork is missing. While investigating, Nate takes a side case when Annie's cat-obsessed friend Rosemund's cat goes missing. Nate is successful in cracking the case and gets to eat a ton of pancakes.
Some dry humor that endeared the book to me.

Finally found a copy of book 1 via audio! We listened to it in the car on a road trip. I must say, this is a series that gets better as it goes along. This book established some of the consecutive things that pop up in every book (like his love of pancakes or how odd Rosamond is), but by reading several in the series already, we already had that figured out without it being blatantly said in book one. So maybe this book would have been better had we not already read a bunch in the series. This is definitely better as a BOOK ONE book, and not one to visit later on. Also, the mystery/solving wasn't my favorite. Very amateur detective stuff compared to his other mysteries in later books.

You can't go wrong with finding the "stolen base" and marc simont illustrations. Phooey to anybody who disagrees. Nate is my man.

The 5 year old says it’s funny and cool. The mom says amusing, cute, and a good throw back.

A cute and funny early-reader mystery with some little embedded lessons about manners and logic.

The writing is lame. But given that, the story itself is actually pretty good. It captures a kid actually being a detective pretty darn well - making breaking down the problem, planning, observing. Probably would work okay as a kid's early read-to-self book. And the art was certainly good enough. But the writing style itself took too much away.
