Very engaging and easy read. Some of the characters are annoying and unsavory but that's the point isn't it?

Such drama and mystery! And a cliffhanger ending! I’d read book 3 right away if I hadn’t promised a friend I would wait so we could read it together!

Disclaimer: I received this book free from Netgalley

Honestly, I can’t say enough about this series. I love the characters, I love the series, I love the way it ties into his other novels (oh heck! spoiler!!) Being as this is the second book in the series it’s kind of hard to avoid spoiling at least little things, so I’m going to try to be as vague as possible, but you are warned.

In book two of the Harbinger series we return to Sera and Cettie. The two young girls with an affinity for “the Mysteries” of this world, have been training and growing in the years that have passed since the first book, Storm Glass. While Cettie has proven to be a natural at connecting to the magical forces around them, Sera is having a difficult time. As the daughter of the Prince Regent she is beset with political intrigue and is unprepared to deal with those already moving to do her harm. Cettie also finds herself the target of a particularly dangerous foe (friend? family?). I’m not sure how things will turn out for the girls, but I can’t tell you how happy I was to hear that book three is coming out later this year, so I won’t have to wait too long! Mr. Wheeler is showering us with riches this year!

I have to admit that Cettie is still my favorite. Last book I saw her as a Jane Eyre type character, but this book I am definitely getting some Esther Summerson (Bleak House) vibes from her. She even has her own Mr. Guppy hanging about, causing her consternation with his absolute adoration. I love a Charles Dickens nod! Another character I adore unabashedly is Lord Fitzroy. I do love a book with grey characters, those who are not 100% good or bad, but one thing I love about this series is there are characters who really are a white knight, 100% on the side of the angels. Fitzroy is someone you can you can just love and that feels almost like a relief to this reader.

I will warn you, this paragraph contains a BIG spoiler as we are starting to see some connection … to Kingfountain. In Storm Glass, we found our way to Muirwood (which felt like a homecoming), so this is an exciting new development that ties us even closer to the original books by Mr. Wheeler.

If you couldn’t tell I really enjoy these books, and if you like fantasy, especially clean fantasy then this is the series for you. Book three is coming soon and I can’t wait to see what happens to Cettie and Sera, as well as see how they tie into the larger history of these worlds. I’m holding my breath for an ARC. I’ve been lucky so far. May the Mysteries provide!

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first. There was less world building, more politics. I feel like it was an inbetween book, tying up questions from the last book, setting up for the next one. It wasn’t as satisfying in its own right as I had hoped.

Blah. I’m hopeful for the next book.

I've loved everything I've read by Jeff Wheeler, and this is no exception. I didn't realize how the world Cettie and Sera live in relates to his Muirwood series until this book. I still think you can read the Harbringer series without having read the Muirwood books, but it will add more depth to your understanding of this world if you've read the series that was the springboard for all of his series. The Harbringer series also connects with the Kingfountain series, but again it isn't absolutely essential to have read that series to understand the current.

My two favorite characters are Sera and Cettie. They're different from each other and both learning new lessons about their roles and their limitations.

Sera and Cettie have been roommates at school, even though they are quite different and from different backgrounds. Sera has been whisked away for a meeting when her grandfather has passed away without an heir. She doesn't feel like she's made a very good showing in front of the council. When a threat arises at the school, everyone assumes it's directed at Sera, as a potential heir to the throne. This dynamic combined with politics directed at Kingfountain's prince, and the old letters Sera gave to Will, creates a set of circumstances where the hopeful princess must make a series of choices. Being naive she doesn't always choose well, but she is honest. Through her quest for the crown she discovers her desire to rules stems from being able to help the people rather than to engrandize herself.

Cettie has always been humble, and is in awe over learning the Mysteries. She also discovers that many others support her, like teachers, her "adoptive" parents and other friends. Even with their support and her newfound knowledge it is up to her to face her fears. She is the only one who can dismiss them. Cettie worries for the future, but is ready to accept challenges. One of the problems being set up for another book, is her love life. She is sought after by one and loves another. And it's more complicated than that, but I don't want to spoil too much. She is of such high moral character I wonder how everything will work out. From past experience I know Wheeler doesn't feel like he has to give us the answer we want.

I highly recommend this book along with all of the others written by Jeff Wheeler.
