A re-telling of A Christmas Carol with a 2nd chance romance between a Manhattan socialite and a Brooklyn cop/hockey player. Nicely written and doesn't suffer too much from its age (it was written in 2003). My only problem was connecting with Elaine - she seemed too brittle and high society for me.

So charming, sweet, and festive. This may be my first Susan Wiggs novel but it won’t be my last!
**Actually a 3.5-rating**
Written in 2003, re-released in the 2010s with a Christmas-cover as it is themed toward the holidays.
It's a 2nd chance romance with a bit of magical dust thrown in, trying to be like a Christmas-Hallmark movie that mirrors some version of "It's a Wonderful Life".
A hard-edge business woman is dumped by her boyfriend on Christmas Eve. She meets a Christmas Elf maintaining a charity bucket [like Salvation Army Santas] and he promises her if she donates $5 to his charity some magic might strike her this season.
Once she forks over the cash, things start happening in her life that bring her back in contact with a Christmas love she met years ago at a skating rink; they only skated every Christmas for 3yrs until the 4th yr when only SHE showed, her heart was broken.
They were mismatched anyway; she was from a rich family and he was from a huge, loving Italian family.
He was going to be in pro hockey, so she imagined she had been left for a sports team.
Come to find out, he never got the hockey scholarship instead got a bum knee and now he's a cop who has a hobby coaching children's hockey.
She has a family Christmas Eve event she needs to go to, called the St. James Affair, where she will be wine-ing and dining a new client. She takes him instead to the event and almost loses him, but a series of magical impossibilities keep throwing them in one another's path.
It ends with the one thing he had always promised her, years ago, which was to bring her to meet his family at Christmas. It was a sweet funny and cute holiday season story.
