Fantastic YA fiction book I found at a free library in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Naomi León’s mindset is one that children of mixed race/ethnicity and/or divided families will be able to relate to. Her love of words was something I could especially relate to.

This was my gateway book to becoming a bookworm. ENOUGH said. I will always go back to this book no matter how old I get

It was another required book. I liked it...not loved, but it was a different sort of book than I was used too, so I'm happy that I did read it.

I'm late to the game, but I loved this book. Naomi isn't necessarily connected to her culture, until she discovers her natural talent of carving comes from her father's side of the family in Mexico.

Naomi's mom comes to town out of nowhere and decides she is going to take Naomi with her to Vegas to live with her new boyfriend, all while abandoning her son all over again. Naomi doesn't trust Skyla, who hit her and may be drinking again.

Naomi's great grandmother helps them escape to Mexico to try to find Naomi's father, but in the end Naomi ends up finding herself.
