This was a good one. I have not read anything by her before, and I was impressed. Nice language, good characters, real issues.

I couldn’t put this book down - great descriptions of people, interesting characters, a bit of suspense and it gave a wonderful view of another culture.
Book talk: Naomi Soledad Leon Outlaw is not exactly a heroine’s name. And her classmates say she’s nobody special. But life with her Gram and little brother, Owen is happy and peaceful. Until the day her mother reappears and wants to take Naomi and leave Own behind.

Read it in library school; totally loved it. I think I cried at the end, too.
I read this story for a children’s literature course. It was great and would definitely recommend it for young readers, or even just adults that want to relax with an easy read.
This book is sheer perfection and Naomi is a strong and memorable character. Highly recommended readers 9-14.
I was a little put off by some of the content, but it was a good example of a culture outside of my own.

I love a good middle grade book! I read this for two reasons: 1- I loved Esperanza Rising by the same author. 2- My son is reading it with his 6th grade class. He isn't loving it, but I did! One reason I love middle grade books is because they're usually a quick read. Another is the hopeful tone, and the message it sends. Becoming Naomi Leon touches on some hard topics- absentee parents being a big one. But between Naomi and Gram, they maintain a level of positivity. If you believe in something enough, you can make it happen. "Leon" means "lion." Naomi must find the lion within and learn to be brave! It's really a beautiful story. I can't say it was better than Esperanza, which had me bawling. This one didn't, and that's ok. It was still really good! I'm excited to talk with Zane about it more once they finish it.
This book is self centered to a girl who is trying to find her destiny. It's a mysterious book that will open your mind to all sorts of postiblities.
