“Totto-chan bên cửa sổ” thực chất là cuốn hồi ký được viết dựa trên kỉ niệm thời thơ ấu của cô Tetsuko tại trường tiểu học Tomoe, ở Tokyo trước Thế chiến II. Ở nơi đó, Totto-chan - một cô bé vừa bị đuổi học ở ngôi trường cũ, vốn vẫn bị cho là “một đứa trẻ hư” được thầy hiệu trưởng Kobayashi đón nhận, thầy luôn tin rằng Totto-chan là cô bé ngoan, thầy tìm thấy những điểm mạnh, khuyến khích em được là chính mình và phát triển với cá tính của riêng mình. Labeled as a naughty child and expelled from her school, the mischievous and curious Totto-chan moved to a school run by principal Sosaku Kobayashi called Tomoe Gakuen.
The school, which consists of train cars instead of regular building as the student's classrooms, has an innovative and unconventional teaching method. The children can choose their own lessons for the day, and they often have outdoor activities that allow them to learn from the nature around them.
Sosaku sees how each children are inherently different, therefore they can't be forced to adhere to the strict regular school curriculum. His passion in teaching is reflected in his love for the children. He tries to understand and communicate with the children and encourages them to express themselves. We can see how the children learn not only in regards to the academic but also real-life skills that help them handle various situations in their lives.
Such an enjoyable read. The children's innocence and interactions are very heartwarming, but there are also emotional moments sprinkled throughout, especially towards the end of the book where the happenings of the World War II began showing more of its impact on the story.

I love this book. Heartwarming. Banyak pesan yg bisa diambil dari ceritanya. Aku suka bagaimana Mr. Kobayashi menanggapi pemikiran dan imajinasi Totto-chan yg luar biasa (yg mungkin tidak semua guru dapat melakukan hal tsb). Aku jg suka interaksi Totto-chan dan teman-temannya, bagus sekali untuk dicontoh anak anak. This book is wonderful. And I think at least everyone should read this book once.
Buku ini punya memori tersendiri buatku pada jaman SMP (waktu itu pinjam dari teman). Senang akhirnya sekarang bisa punya sendiri❤
