The way this captures the POV of an elementary school child really drives home the point Kuroyanagi is setting out to make: At one point she talks about how her former headmaster thought his students would always understand and remember what it was like to be a child.
Very comforting despite (or maybe even because) of its rather grim ending. Because while grim it is also realistic, and the existence of the book itself, as well as the cute little “Where are they now” bit in the Epilogue and the message that I explained above, all paint this strong picture of comfort despite circumstances.
