I remember reading this book as a kid in Marathi. My first ever fiction book that showed me how much of an impact words can have on you. It was magical and emotional.
Would recommend it to everyone!

The Ending was a bit tragic though and the story should have been a bit longer.

Totto-chan is the recollection of the author when she attended Tomoe Gakuen before WWII erupted. It is a narration of separate events from when Tetsuko or Totto-chan started school in first grade to the time WWII reached its climax. The stories focus on different forms of learning catered by the school and how they fitted different students with different capabilities. Totto-chan who was slightly different from other children found her place in Tomoe Gakuen, where the principal believed in natural learning and how children needed balance to reach their potential. I found this very relatable as a teacher, although I questioned some of the teaching approaches. There are some tear-jerking moments when young Totto-chan learned of grief and loss. The concept of war however, is not the centre in this book, probably with Totto-chan being too young to understand it at the moment.

Relived my childhood days by rereading this one 😁 Absolutely delightful 😍

This is literally my favorite book

A beautiful biography that even suitable to read for children, dedicated to a(private) school called Tomoe, her family and inspired headmaster, Mr. Kobayashi.
The story taken place during pacific war, end of 30’s beginning of 40’s.
It made me realize something that in order to be a fine educator, one should have high ideals (achieved by good and proper education background) and great love for children. This two aspects playing an important role in education. Mr. Kobayashi's educational methods as described by the writer, he believed all children are born with an innate good nature, and the educators have a purpose to uncover their good nature, so that the children will grow into people with self esteem and individuality. His unconventional methods of teaching consisted learn from the pro’s (for example, from the farmer who taught the pupils about farming and cultivation), teaching the pupils not by giving lectures but through activities so the pupils can learn in the most fun way that they will never forget. Not to forget that is not valued by the quantity subjects the pupils learn in the class but the quality.

Totto-Chan family described here also as well supportive foundation. They know how to act instead of to react and understand to carefully choosing words in expressing their feelings to their daughter.
This book fascinated me in every possible way.
