Sally seemed to remember A LOT about the Duke and everything he said even though she was sent away when she was eight and came back when she was 17 and he died shortly after.
The most  interesting thing for me was figuring out that it was loosely based on the story of King Henry the eighth.  🤷🏼‍♀️

DNF: I was listening to the audiobook and had about an hour left and I just wasn’t motivated to finish. The book did start strong and I enjoyed the characters. It felt very similar to To Kill A Mockingbird to me and I thought it would be an instant classic. The author’s recording made it feel like a memoir and person and very enjoyable to listen to.
But there was no strong plot and it felt more like a book describing life events rather than personal triumph and success. Well written
Towards the end I was confused about all the Dukes sayings and quips that sally referenced considering he sent her away young and he died relatively soon after she returned. How much time did she spend with him?

Hm.

Remember All My Children? Erica Kane, the female protagonist who had everything in the world happen to her, one after the other, again and again? That was kind of like Sallie Kincaid.

Every time she turned around someone else close to her was dying, another illegitimate sibling was turning up, her business was being bombed, her house was being burned and so on and so on.

The character was great but sort of underdeveloped with everything she did being a result of what her daddy would have wanted or everything she felt being told to us, not shown to us.
A strong female character? Those don't generally flow with the whims and wishes of the male characters so no - even if she did wear pants and carry a gun and drive a car.

Really boring.  It kind of felt like nothing happened, even though a lot actually did.  The fact I listened to the audiobook didn't help, the author narrated and every voice sounded so identical that I couldn't tell when a character was speaking and when it was being narrated, or when speakers changed.
