Loved this new series! I've read the prequel novellas and they peaked my interest, but this first story pretty well sealed it! Kit's a strong, interesting character with a great attitude, I like how the world is set up, and the story was complex and unpredictable. The only complaints I have were that I wanted more action in terms of hand-to-hand combat. The final fight was all but non-existent, for Kit's part. Another issue I had was the love interest. I often enjoy tough guys, but this guy got on my nerves. He was disrespectful and possessive, even abusive. Granted, there were a couple sweet things he did, but for the most part, I didn't like him much. Too much Alpha male. But that's just nitpicks. The story is a lot of fun and reminds me why I love urban fantasy so much.
I was hoping for another Kate Daniels type of book, but I didn't think I'd find a bad remake of Kate Daniels. Kate Daniels is everything that Kit wants to be. She's headstrong, descendant of a powerful being (or species), incredibly skilled with a weapon, and has a handful of witty comebacks. Kit's the girl trying too hard to be her. I was really disappointed because I was looking for something new and original, but I instead got a ripoff of one of my favorite series. Kit stumbles into all these scenarios that she sets herself up for. Don't even get me started on Damon. He's the male counterpart to Curran. He's a rare shifter, Alpha, and falls deeply in love with our heroine. However, Curran and Kate had so much more to work through and consider before they took the dive and they also didn't get together in the first 100 pages of the Kate Daniels series. It took around 2 books, 3-4 if we're counting when they officially get together. Damon fell in love with Kit from day 1. Argh. It just irritates me that this book had so much promise and more of everything when I just got a redo of Kate Daniels, fanfiction style. I would not recommend this to the paranormal romance lovers. Pick up Kate Daniels or Mercy Thompson instead.
J.C. Daniels is the penname for writer [a:Shiloh Walker|96909|Shiloh Walker|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1317604517p2/96909.jpg]. I had been hearing a lot about this series and it seemed to have good word of mouth. I finally decided to give it a try. Kit Colbana is half human, half aneira (warriors / assassins). Being a "halfbreed" she was considered beneath the rest of her race. She was beaten constantly throughout her childhood and left to live in dirt and half fed. When she was old enough she was able to run away from that and start making a living for herself. She's become a P.I. or sorts for the NH (non-human) world and she's called upon by the Shifter Cat Alpha to find her lost nephew. While she will be paid hansomely if she succeeds, her life it forfeit if she fails. To top it all off, Kit has to keep one of the Cat Shifter in tow during her investigation. Things are not looking good.
Already we know that Kit is tough. But I like that, just because she has a hard exterior she's still likeable. It doesn't take hearing about her sad past in order for the readers to soften towards Kit. There's just something there right away that even though she's tough and will jump right in a fight to defend herself, you can tell she's survived and she's doing what she must in order to keep surviving. You can also tell, through her interactions with others, that she has a heart. She doesn't want anyone to go through the kind of life she's had to live and she will make sure of it.
The task of finding the young shifter is almost masked by the interactions between Kit and the Cat Shifter Damon, who is charged with "helping" Kit out on the case. I say "helping" because he seems to loom around too close for Kit's comfort and Kit feels he's more of a hinderance than a help. The chemistry between them is very evident from page one and in my mind it was only a matter of time before something more happened.
Daniels created a very interesting world where humans do know about the non-humans. The non-humans consist (that we know) of vampires, shifters, and witches mainly. There are other non-humans (Kit herself is half Aneira), but we haven't really dealt with them yet.
I really liked this story. It was a pretty quick read and reminded me a lot of [a:Ilona Andrews|21748|Ilona Andrews|http://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1219436898p2/21748.jpg] Kate Daniels series which is one of my favorites. I can't wait to pick up [b:Night Blade|15980001|Night Blade (Colbana Files, #2)|J.C. Daniels|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1360593239s/15980001.jpg|21731909] but don't know what I do until Book 3 comes out next year.

The first half to three quarters was fun. I enjoyed the characters, but plot developments towards the end seemed to happen merely because they were needed to advance the plot. (see, e. g., 'he's in rut ')
Still, I'm I interested enough to read the next book in this series.

Very intriguing story. This could turn out to be one of my favourite series.
I think I have e-book related issues. I have this nagging feeling that if I had read this in print then I would have enjoyed it more. Why? Because I am WEIRD. I hate the one page thing, it makes me read fast and that is bad cos I already read fast. Ebooks makes me skim faster too.
Ok end of ebook rant, I need therapy.
Anyway, Kit is half amazon with ISSUES. Yes all caps cos she thinks about her sadistic evil family all the freaking time. If I need therapy then this girl seriously needs it. Because she seems more human, shifters tend to treat her badly. And she constantly has to prove that she can be strong. Just leave Kit. Just leave. She seems weak a lot.
Damon is a cat shifter who protects her while she is on a job. She hates him, he is an asshole (but not too bad.) I liked how he was all want! But still stays away. Though at first I wanted him dead, asshole as he was. I mean effing ahole!
Good action, story, (I would have liked less of my granma beat me though). But, here is the thing, it was good. But would I buy more? Nah. If I found it at the library, then yes.

I felt like this whole book was very plot driven all the characters seemed to have pretty one dimensional personalities.
Spoiler
I don't really get why kit falls for damon, yes he's hot (we got it the first time) but he doesn't seem to have much personality beyond being pissed off and moody so I didn't really see any emotional connection between them.

I loved this book! There's a strong bad ass heroine, a sexy, alpha male shifter who's a bad ass mofo, witches, vampires and a great story. There's not much, not to love about this one and to top it off this is just the first in the series which means there's a lot more awesomeness to follow which I can't for. I'm so very happy the other two books are available and on my kindle :)
