Come Rain or Come Shine was my first book by Kazuo Ishiguro and I didn’t really know what to expect.

It’s a short story filled with absurdity and melancholy that I started loving from the first page.. but unfortunately the love dried up more and more as I kept reading. I’m torn.

‘Then before you know it, you’re forty-seven years old, and the people you started out with have long ago been replaced by a generation who gossip about different things, take different drugs and listen to different music’

I usually associate Kazuo Ishiguro with slow and emotion-driven plots, but this really turned out different than how I expected it to be. It’s definitely no Remains of the Day or Never Let Me Go, since the tone is not one of somber reflection and is more of being hilarious and absurd, BUT. the book still has the element of Ishiguro in it. Love the emphasis on human connection/relationships and how they can both sustain us and ruin us. The book also portrays loneliness but it is laced with such witty writing that absolutely carries this book. Love et….

While the characters are not necessarily likeable and the plot is actually pretty simple, I do appreciate how bittersweet the ending is. I still prefer Ishiguro’s other stories and exploration of themes, but this was just light and easy to read so I’m not complaining!

I’d read anything this man writes TBH. I am already lucky enough that he lives and exists in this world
