As a young person, an adult made me read this. It was an interesting enough story with a good message about environmentalism. I felt zero engagement with the characters but wished them well saving owls.

This was a cute story. It was predictable, but a nice break from some of the more serious reads I've done lately.

A good book with a good message. Hoot contains a lot of good messages and a lot of heart without coming off as cheesy. It keeps up a lot of humor and the sort of "hero" of the book, the boy who knew about the owls and went about saving them, was a REAL boy and wasn't perfect. He made mistakes and seemed much more authentic than some "hero" characters in other books.

MEDIA SPECIALIST REVIEW -
This is a lighthearted book with a strong message. Kids will love it, and perhaps learn something at the same time. I find myself recommending Carl Hiaasen often because if the student likes one of his books, they will probably read more...and there are a lot to keep them reading. His books are empowering without being preachy. They show that one person can make a difference and that a lot of the time, there are others who want to do good, but are just waiting for a leader. I love that his leaders are usually children - often with the support of adults. Hiaasen's kids books are a must have for any school library.

First OBOB read for the 2018 season, and this is a great start. Hoot is a fast, funny read with elements of mystery and action thrown in. The message is spot-on with empowering kids to make changes by making the right choices and taking stands. This isn't sugar coated either as not every issue can so easily be resolved. Great OBOB choice and fun for the whole family.
