It's a book! Charles Dickens got paid by the word and you can see it in this book. There are stories and subplots that just didn't need to exist.

Overall I enjoyed the book but I would have enjoyed it if it was half the word count so much more. Our characters are sweet and interesting but they feel very one note overall for me. We have a bad guy, we have a good guy, we have an honest guy... So on and so forth.

Read the spark notes.

Not as good as David Copperfield. I got a bit lost with the characters but good connections made at the end.

I like when Nell gets stoned and stares up into the night sky and contemplates eternity.

This charming classic has many of my favorite Dickens features: vivid and unforgettable characters, a memorable plot, and sharply drawn depictions of England during the industrial revolution. Nell is the weak point. That Dickens centered his story on an ordinary child was revolutionary in his time but not so now, and Nell has no substance as a plausible human being — she’s so good and long suffering that she’s completely unbelievable. One star off for Nell. Otherwise this book, loaded with humor and cynicism and genuine fondness for rural England, is a triumph. And the illustrations are an absolute delight.
