4.5 stars, rounded up. That was a wild and twisty police procedural. This specific genre and this author were both new to me, and I’ll definitely be back for the 2nd book in this series. The main character, Detective Foster, is an interesting and well-written character.

The writing style with alternating viewpoints from the different murder suspects kept me engaged and guessing!

Not sure about this one.

Harriet Foster might have potential as a lead character, and I did enjoy her pairing with Vera Li.

But not sure I liked the book. Found that it rather dragged in some places and I thought some (maybe even most) of the characterizations were pretty superficial. Most of them little better than stereotypes, to wit Lonergan, who as a white 'old school' cop clearly represents everything bad about policing, especially when it is done by unreconstructed troglodytes. Had the sergeant of the precinct been described as lesbian, her sterotyping would have been complete.

The plot was okay, but only okay.

Not sure whether or not I will be back for more.

Great read! I am about to go back and read her other series now since book 2 for this one isn’t out for a year! I can’t wait to read more about the Detective Duo gets up to!

I quite liked Harriet Foster and Li and will read the next.

This was pretty good. Some of the writing was overwrought, particularly early in the book, but it got better. I’ll read the next one.
