Promising police procedural from an author who's new to me. Chicago-set, with an intriguing lead detective, Harriet Foster, and a great supporting team, I'm looking forward to reading number 2 in the series. Highly recommended to police procedural fans.

For a mystery/thriller, this was...alright. It took me a bit to get into it and I almost decided to give up on it for a while until the mystery part really started getting underway. Once it got underway, I sped through the rest of it, but tbh, I never ended up caring about the main character. I really mostly got invested in the side plot with Amelia and Bodie. I love some good family secret drama and the effect that those secrets have on the people involved, and I felt like there was way more psychological fuckery and development in that part of the story than with Harriet. Harriet just sort of alternated between stoic/focused on work and sad the whole time and I sort of just...didn't care after a while lol.

But I'm 100% here for Amelia and Bodie
finding out that they were kidnapped as children by a murderer and raised by him because he wanted to see if he could ~love
, and the psychological (and practical) fallout of that. Even though we never met him,
I really felt for their biological dad who died without knowing what happened to his family
. Honestly, I felt more for a character who died before the story actually started than the main character of the novel, which feels like a sign that the main character wasn't too great lol.

I also really liked the last chapter and the hope that it focused on for Bodie. Wish I could find out more about what happens to him in his journey to start a new life rather than find out more about Harriet in the next book!

This one is a tough 3 stars, so you may end up liking it.

I’m giving it 3 stars only because there are many things that would have made this book a lot better, which is a bit disappointing. I don’t want to add any spoilers, but what’s the point of Lonergan’s character?

I don’t know. You may like it, but I think there are a lot of things that could’ve improved the book.

Since this is the start of a series I cut a little slack but there was too much time spent on introducing characters and backgrounds. It took too long to get anywhere and felt a bit messy when it did.

Come to the dark side …. of the Windy City!

This foray into the works of a new-to-me author was a little edgier than I expected. Tracy Clark doesn’t shy away from the gritty darkness of crime. However, the writing style and the mystery held my attention and I couldn’t put the book down.

In short: A Chicago detective hunts for a serial killer with an affinity for blue-eyed redheads.

I was caught up in seeing how the two stories would intersect. On one hand, I wanted to know how the grieving detective, who’d just transferred to a new precinct would fit in and be mentally ‘in the game.’ On the other hand, I was curious about the twins Brodie and Amelia Morgan. One seemed evil enough to be a serial killer, but the other was the balancing force, and couldn’t seem to catch her brother doing anything ‘wrong.’ All of the different points of view kept me on my toes and offered me multiple ‘wrong turns.’

I was also caught up in the wonderful characterization. Clark crafted her female protagonist with such authenticity and tenacity, that I was instantly drawn to her. I kept rooting for her as she stood her ground with her new partner and demanded respect.

The themes of prejudice, defunding the police, activism, and the age-old debate about nature vs nurture were well integrated into the plot and would lend to great book club discussions.

This edgy police procedural may have pushed my boundaries a little, but the style was so engaging, there was no filler fluff, and it was well-plotted. This first in a series intrigued me enough to read the second book in the series.

Hide is a well paced & extremely well written police procedural thriller. The descriptions are gruesome and the horror is intense.

I enjoyed the multiple character POV’s. It gave the reader an unabridged insight into the crime/criminal/characters.

While I did figure out the twist in advance, the action and pace kept me invested. The ending was somewhat neat & tidy but as I knew it was the beginning of a new series of books about the MC, it was to be expected. I am looking forward to reading the books that will follow.
