Very much in the same vein as Graveyard and Ocean - strange child’s story narrated excellently by Neil Gaiman. I can’t help but compare it to the movie, which I love. I think the movie improved on it in some ways, and I feel like Neil Gaiman’s stories play out so well visually. But still cool to read!

"I think I just wanted the book to creep up on you slowly"
"I learned when people began to read it, that children experienced as an adventure, but which gave adults nightmares"
How I felt about Coraline can be expressed by the above two comments from the author himself. When I started the book, it felt... uncomfortable. somehow the flow of the book seemed forced, characters uninteresting. Coraline's world looked grim to me. But once I got to the ice-breaking point, it just kind of rolls off by itself. Also, Neil Gaiman wrote the last two-third after six long years, so the writing becomes more gripping, the dialogues become wittier and you get what you'd expect from the author of American Gods to write.
On a personal note, In the last two months, while I heard several audiobooks, I couldn't concentrate on reading any. I finished the last portion in a satisfying spell of 1hr and 23 minutes, without halting to check notifications/ call message someone. Maybe fairy tales are the way to go to break through reader's block?

Way darker than the movie, and soooo good! Always a huge Coraline fan!

i've always wanted to read this book and i'm really glad i have now! this book is paced really well for a kids horror novel, and it's really descriptive without going over the top.
i think i would've loved this book as a kid.
