I picked up [b:Coraline|17061|Coraline|Neil Gaiman|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1443798739s/17061.jpg|2834844] after hearing so much about the movie. I didn't even realize [a:Neil Gaiman|1221698|Neil Gaiman|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1234150163p2/1221698.jpg] wrote this until I had it in my hands. This is very obviously a children's book or kid's fiction, but adults will get something out of it entirely different than a child will. Most kids that I've talked to that read this adored it, but most adults adored it but also put it more in the "creepy" category. This book was quick and filled from one page to the next of plot. I loved it. It was scary to me in a different way that I think you'll just have to see for yourself, because no amount of describing it will really give you feel feel of it.

Definitely, pick this one up. I'm so glad that I did.

read this to my sister over course of the last month or so (after having read it as a child myself) and i can safely say that this is an absolute banger

for a children’s book (or even just a book) it’s so engagingly well written with some really intelligent ideas

probably the best thing i’ve read to my sister what a good book

This was not for me. I found myself equal parts bored and creeped out. I thought this was for readers age 9+? No. These themes are not OK for 9 year olds. Maybe 14+.

I love the movie so figured I’d finally read the book. I enjoyed it. It’s got a good amount of creepy imagery. The bedlam is a great representation of a manipulative person. The characters are fun and quirky, and there’s a good bit of character development on Coraline’s part.

However, I kept wishing for a little more insight into Coraline’s thoughts and feelings. The inconsistent writing style didn’t help with that. It went back and forth between virtually no insight to a decent amount of it. Overall it felt kind of hollow.

I forgot how much I loved this book. I read it for the first time in third grade and it has always stuck with me but not until I picked it up again this week in an attempt to halfheartedly feed the haunting nostalgia that always rears its ugly head at this time of year, did I remember how magical and eerie this story is. Gaiman has written one of my favorite books of all time, and of the books I have read this year, American Gods, so I should've known how lovely and enchanting his storytelling was before reopening this cover. I seriously believe this helped jumpstart my love for science fiction and the otherworldly as a child and for that I am very grateful for Neil Gaiman and the story he has shared with me.

Always a good one to revisit. So whimsical and spooky. I did the audiobook this time and loved Neil Gaiman’s narration—he always sounds like he’s smiling while he’s reading and it’s just a good vibe all around.
