This book was so different from the movie and I was severely scared by the scene with the father in the basement.
First of all, the writing style was really good. I liked how the feelings of Coraline were described, even though this was in 3rd person. I think this book definitely deserves more hype.
I didn’t expect so much but I have always loved the movie. But omg, even though this book was so short, I really LOVED it. I would recommend it to everyone on this planet if I could, so go and read this book ASAP.
I know, I might sound like a history teacher rn but even though I didn’t pay crazy much attention to any imagery or literary devices, this book has a message. I would say it’s that you should appreciate what you have and not take it for granted.
Also, this was kinda like a modern fairytale and I really liked that.
All in all, this is the perfect book to start the spooky season, just like I did. The vibes in this book are rainy, dark and kinda suppressing (idk how to describe it otherwise).
So now, go and read this book before I come to your house and force you to read these 160 pages of a masterpiece.

My childhood bookcase contained (mostly) my elder sister's goosebumps books, an assortment of gruesome fairytales and any book with a pretty cover I could pick out in the library. Coraline would've fit right in, and I wish it would've been there, as Gaiman conveys an underlying moral without being overbearingly obvious, providing us instead with a lesson about bravery and family alongside a story which practically had my fingertips glued to the beautifully illustrated pages.

Wow! I had fun reading Coraline! It feels like a different story from the film, but I usually like book and movie adaptations if they evoke the same emotion! The book was a less scary experience for me. Horror is usually not my genre, but I'm trying to get into it with stories I can handle. Plot-wise, it reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, but a dark and twisted (and maybe better) version of the Hidden World/door trope! Coraline is a cool MC! I love her sense of humor; she can spew some deep philosophical stuff at times, and I'm in awe of her wisdom! Neil Gaiman is a true mastermind in writing!

Some quotes below that really hit the spot for me:
“You really don’t understand, do you?” she said. “I don’t want whatever I want. Nobody does. Not really. What kind of fun would it be if I just got everything I ever wanted? Just like that, and it didn’t mean anything. What then?”
“When you're scared but you still do it anyway, that's brave.”
“Sometimes Coraline would forget who she was while she was daydreaming that she was exploring the Arctic, or the Amazon rainforest, or darkest Africa, and it was not until someone tapped her on the shoulder or said her name that Coraline would come back from a million miles away with a start, and all in a fraction of a second have to remember who she was, and what her name was, and that she was even there at all.”

I enjoyed this book but this is a rare occurrence where the movie improved the story and created a world for people to really love and resonate with.
