This was a powerful, beautiful book and it makes me so glad I reserved Thirsty at the library (comes out Tuesday!). This book follows Avery, whose grandmother is sick. So Avery packs up with her family and moves to take care of her. When Avery gets to the small town of Bardell in the south, she learns about her family and the generational trauma that has torn her family apart. All she wants to do is understand and try to fix it before her grandmother dies.

I thought this book was so well written. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to find out what was going to happen. I was so curious about Avery’s family, and I felt like with every chapter you learned something new that made you think. I loved her relationship with her parents and her growing relationship with her grandmother. I also loved her friendship with Jade and Simone. There was SO much to unpack there. I’d read a whole new book on these characters because they had so much going on.

I thought the story wrapped up so well and I loved how the family came together at the end. The thanksgiving spent at the island that meant so much to Mama Letty had me tearing up. That night at the beach!!

I cannot wait to read Thirsty and see what @jashammonds continues to bring to YA lit. A fantastic book that should definitely be read by as many people as possible!

I really enjoyed the cast of characters, and the relationships/conversations between them felt real. As a queer person who is estranged from bio family, the way some of the family issues were worked through rubbed me the wrong way.

“Not every love is given the chance to bloom beyond possibility.”

This book was so well done. I feel like the author did a phenomenal job handling some really tough topics. This book really showed the complexities of human beings and how everyone is not all good and not all bad. Overall, a wonderful and thought provoking read.
