This book captivated me from the first page. A woman wakes up from a night of some serious drinking to find her boyfriend dead in the next room. Did she do it? And what's the connection between his murder and her past visit to a psychiatric hospital?
Dysfunctional Scottish family, scrubbing by at a dead-end job, friends who will back you when the chips are down--or not. Can you trust your friends? Can you trust your family? And whose version of the past is the true one?
The mystery was good enough to keep me guessing, the other characters interesting and realistic without being distracting. Because how would YOU react if you went to bed one night, pissed, thinking your better off without him now that you know he's married, and when you wake up he's been tied to a chair in your living room and murdered? Would you have the intestinal fortitude to search for the truth, no matter how ugly?
Just can't wait to read more by this author.

Trigger warning: abuse, bullying, rape, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, grizzly murder, child abuse.
Takes place in Scotland, must be beautiful, looked places up on Google Earth.
Very well written debut, nice twists and turns I did not see coming.
In the end one crucial questions stays open, unanswered.
Could have used a little more suspense or action, but is maybe more real this way.
Can see other people or me on different day rate that 5 stars.
Highly recommended, standaloneyeah should have read the title again, right here on Goodreads it is clearly shown as the first of a series.
First and so far the only book from [a:Denise Mina|54069|Denise Mina|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1311619662p2/54069.jpg] I read, although this was bought and on my TBR since 2015 (nearly 6 years). Owning more (3 today) I will certainly read more of her.

I don’t know, maybe five stars? Excellent, gritty, dark Scottish crime novel. Loved the MC, Maureen. Definitely will read the next in the series.

Recommended to me by Amani Roland. So far - very good. I've already put her other books on hold at the library just in case they're as good as this one.

Gritty and painful and raw-- and yet perfect. A deeply flawed female protagonist who really doesn't handle life well, but who we love and root for. Delightful twists and highly believable characters.
