The art in SubZero was absolutely delightful, I enjoyed looking at each page for a minute before reading any of the words. Each panel helped to move the story along and conveyed emotion, helping with the “show, don’t tell” part of storytelling. I loved the design of the dragons, as well as the living markings on the vessels, and would have enjoyed seeing more of those.

I had difficulty seeing much personality in any of the characters, however. This first volume had little backstory, obviously, but not enough to make me care very much about the outcome. I would have liked a little bit more insight into
why Clove doesn’t take her dragon form and what, exactly the war was about
. While I do typically enjoy the “marry to end a war”/ enemies to lovers trope, Kyro was a jerk seemingly just for the sake of being a jerk and Clove read as damsel in distress and not a strong royal sacrificing for her people…she also had zero personality. The hints at a love triangle between
Clove and the Captain (I can’t even remember his name-which tells me a lot)
were a bit eye rolling, and I could have done without that. Simply having them be best friends would have been enough. After 330 pages, I felt like I didn’t have any good idea of character motivation, the backstory, how the red dragon kingdom was run (who, exactly, is in charge), or well, much of anything.

Currently, I wouldn’t recommend this graphic novel due to the issues listed above. However, I would probably pick up the second volume at the library to see if it fleshed out the characters and story any more than the first, then decide about recommending it from there.

Finally found a graphic novels with DRAGONSSSS!!! 🐉

‘Subzero’ follows Princess Clove as she agrees to marry her enemy—Prince Kyro—in order to stop a 300-year-war between the two kingdoms. There are numerous variables at play with many not wanting the marriage to bring piece while others are doing their best for the marriage to go ahead. The two main characters have a complicated relationship, their union is being tested by hidden secrets and  it doesn’t help that there are those working from the shadows to bring ruin. This all comes together in an intriguing story.

Each character is uniquely presented; all harbouring secrets and twists to their lives that either laughing, swooning or feeling sorrow on behalf of the character.

Clove is represented as such a brave young woman who’s willing to put her people before her own happiness. She shows kindness to everyone and she is tactful. Yet she’s burned by her own grief. Kyra is a tormented prince who’s been burdened by the responsibilities of his past and present; ultimately annoyed by his current arrange marriage.

I also enjoyed Kharis’ character, she’s a bit of an enigma. Aaron was another interesting character, I look forward to seeing how his character fares, especially with dealing with his feelings for Clove.

The tension growing between the Prince, Princess and Aaron is interesting. It’s a question of who will the Princes choose, the bad boy or good boy?

The fantasy aspect of the plot draws you in, it’s mixed with the politics of the clans which keeps the reader engaged. This first volume has a great introduction of characters as well as the world-building, used more as a set up to the plot. Including humour, chemistry, action and varying dynamics.

Overall, a very good start to this graphic novel series. I can’t wait for the release of the second volume, I’m most anticipating it, seen as I found myself unable to put this first to one down. The art was done beautifully, with eye-catching detail. The artist definitely knew what they were doing when they created such dreamy characters in the male leads.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

4 stars - It was really good

This volume collects chapters 1-25 of the Webtoon comic

To save her people, Princess Clove, the last remaining heir of the Cerulean Dragon clan, has agreed to marry her enemy, Prince Kyro of the Crimson Dragon Clan. Clove quickly realizes that this marriage is not going to be as straightforward as she was expecting because Prince Kyro has enemies in the palace that are determined to stop the peace treaty from continuing.

This was a beautifully illustrated and captivating story from the very beginning. Clove is a princess who is determined to save her people, even putting herself in her enemies hands while being terrified. While Clove may appear weak, she is in fact a very strong woman who is also traumatized by this 300 year old war. I like that we see her stand up for herself, even while she is terrified and expects to die. It made me like her so much more.

Kyro is the soon to be leader of the Crimson Dragon clan. He is a standoffish man who doesn’t want to be in an arranged marriage. I liked that while he is angry and abrasive, we can understand why he is that way as we learn about his past and the danger that surrounds him. There is a lot of tension between these two because they still don’t really know each other yet but are willing to go through with the marriage if it means peace. I am very interested in seeing how their marriage plays out and how they work together to take down the enemies that are trying to sabotage them.

Overall, I think this is a great start for a series and I can’t wait to read more. I am probably going to check this out on Webtoon’s just so I can find out what happens next because I don’t want to wait for volume 2.

Thank you to NetGalley and OniPress for this E-Arc in exchange for an honest review.

This is a marriage of convenience fantasy romance that was originally a webtoon and is now being published .

The art is absolutely amazing, stunning visuals. The story was interesting and I’m intrigued to read the rest of the series. I very much enjoyed the magic system/dragon shifting.

In this first book the main characters are not yet married, but they meet and are planning on having a marriage of convenience in order to bring peace to a 300 year long war.

Overall I had a good time with this book and I’m excited to read the rest of the series!

The tension in their first meeting was amazing and had me kicking my feet. I'm not usually a fan of enemies to lovers or marriage of convenience but this has really gripped me. The character profiles at the back are beautiful and provide some interesting information about the main characters. The art style is unlike the graphic novels that I usually read but I loved it, it was so detailed.

I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for the rest of the volumes when they are released.

Thank you to Oni Press and NetGalley for an early digital copy of this graphic novel. This review is my honest feedback and given voluntarily.

Overall this wasn’t a bad start to this series/comic. Nice cozy read with great illustration. I did feel like there was a bit of background context missing but it wasn’t really a big deal for me. The illustration was beautiful and I really loved the color themes for the character groups. I had not read this comic on Webtoons prior to reading this volume of the novel version, so the whole story was new to me. I did feel like the story itself did not really progress all that much for the length of this first volume, but the amount of illustration we get is quite a lot, and honestly, for a graphic novel, I’m ok with that. I’m here for the illustration so I’m kind of appreciative of that being more at the forefront.

I look forward to seeing where this story goes, as there seems to be some more layers hidden just under the surface that are about to pop off in the next volume/episodes. I would definitely recommend as one to read for those looking to get into graphic novels or those looking for an interesting yet mysterious story with some healthy tension between characters. Enjoy! 🤙🏼💕
