Another Stephen King book, so you know there will be snide remarks against Evangelical/Christians, and anyone who isn’t subscribed to mainstream liberal nonsense. Also, sir, we don’t need to be reminded 50 times that he is translating the language in his head. Other than that, it was an okay dark fantasy tale that I imagine he half wrote sitting on the toilet.

King has given us an epic Fairy Tale that, while resembling our favorite classics, is nothing like I've read before. It is a long dense book but the level of detail is what brings the story to life.

This is one of my favorites by King so far. There is detailed gore tossed in this whimsical story.

P.S. the dog will be your favorite character

This was a delightful, dark fantasy by Stephen King. It wasn’t horror or scary like his other works, but almost an adult fantasy which there aren’t much of. I was really pleased. Some of his books have a lame climax or conclusion, but this one was good. I really enjoyed it, honestly. I will add he’s always unnecessarily descriptive of gore.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I've never read Stephen King as I'm not into horror but this is not horror, more dark fairy tale/fantasy.

What I liked:
-the world building, an interesting way of looking at our fairy tales.
-Charlie & Radar the dog! Love, love their dynamic.
-How Charlie & his fathers relationship progresses.

What I didn't like:
-too much cussing for my taste
-some pretty vulgar phrasing at times
-the "this world's" current events/happenings being added into the story. It felt very random. It felt like they were added in so we can know the authors opinions on those things but it kept disrupting the flow of story and was distracting.

If not for my dislike reasons above I would have rated this 4 stars.

🏰 This feels like someone gave Stephen King the "write a popular fairy tale as a modern day story" prompt that we all got in creative writing class in high school and he just ran with it for 600 pages.

🗡️ There's objectively nothing wrong with this, expect that the pacing slow. (So slow that I--as someone who strictly listens to audiobooks no faster 1.35x because I like to be immersed in the inflection and voice acting--had to bump this sucker up to 2x to be able to get through it.)

🐕‍🦺 Charlie is a well-rounded character, whose motivations totally hit hard...as I, too, would risk life and limb to get even just a little more time with my dog. The "other" world was as immersive as I would hope. The relationships appropriately tugged at my heart strings. And yet...

🧌 This was such a standard chosen one hero's tale. Prototypical, in fact. More a homage to fairy tales than a new and original one. At such a hulking tome from a well-loved author (who has created some of my favorite stories ever), I just expected more I guess.

🎒 Listen, I'm not my any means mad that I read this (I enjoyed it a lot and have even recommended it to a few people already), but I also don't think it added anything to my life either. This was just really and truly fine.
