A terrifying and heartbreaking book. Despite its extremely short length — especially once you remove the introduction and afterword — this epistolary novel about the rapidly deteriorating relationship between a Jewish German American and his German friend packs a vicious punch. It made a mark when it was first published, and though its impact has lessened a bit over time, given the novelty has worn off, its message and emotional resonance still stand today. Whew!
Graphic: Antisemitism
Moderate: Death and Genocide
Minor: War and Pregnancy
