I really loved this premise. The background and lore of it was really interesting. There's still a lot we don't know, even as you get to the end, but I'm assuming all of it will be covered in the later books. Can't wait for the next!
I think this may be 4.15 stars for me. I liked this a lot - way more than I expected - but maybe that's because I did set my expectations low. Its main plot and character traits reminded me of Serpent and Dove at the start, so I started to get real nervous at the beginning (I thought the actual Serpent and Dove book was ok, but man the others were awful), but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Even the dreaded love triangle didn't bother me here - it even seems like it might go in somewhat less straight-forward direction than a typical YA love triangle. If not, that will be highly disappointing.
And I really liked the heroine a lot. I wasn't sure I would at first, I think because of PTSD from other fantasy romance heroines, but she was great - self-assured and confident, but also not arrogant or impetuous or childish like so many others are in these types of books.
Here's hoping the next book is as good.

3.5☆ I enjoyed the overall premise of this book and the winning feature that has me drawn and ready to read the next and why I rounded up are the characters. They match their age, the banter isn't try hard nor totally out of theme of the story, and they make mistakes. Redeemable mistakes. They aren't super amazing at everything they do. and it may be at the time I'm reading... but having characters like this is important to me as a reader.
What I felt lacked was support for the world building. We get thrown into the world with no explanations of who people are, how the magic works, where we are, and explanations come too late. I think this book would have majorly benefited from a prologue that did a vague retelling of the fall of the gods to describe the magic and the gods and the location. Then, it could have moved seamlessly into the storyline.

This was so good! I can definitely tell the author has grown in her writing style and it absolutely shows.
Although: funny aside: there was a scene where the main female character and one of the male characters were sitting in front of the fire. Then they were standing with no indication they had stood. Then the male character stood up from the couch two more times.
Overall, I really enjoyed this and can’t wait to read the next one!
