This had been sat part read on my kindle for months as I was not drawn back to finish. So I finally put the effort in and it was very much a mixed bag.

Lore was a good main character. I liked her, I liked her attitude and I wanted her to succeed. Individually I actually liked both MMCs - well, I understood their motivations and individual brooding ways. What I didn’t understand was the love triangle vibe when it was quite unclear what each couple saw in eachother apart from mutual hotness and a shared plan. If I need to get on board with either romance I need some more development.

And the plot. I am not sure what on earth happened in the last part of the book but it felt rushed and confusing and not earned.

This was a re-read for me this time around, but I don't have too much to add to my original review other than noting that my opinions did not change after reading again; I still love this book just as much as I did a year ago.

Original: I don't have a ton to say about this book, and for once, that's not a bad thing.

I understand that the main criticisms are the overall lack of plot and a weak magic system. I agree with those assessments.
However, what really made this book for me (and aided in the overall decision to continue the series) is the character development.

Based on how everyone was written in the first half of this book, I genuinely thought I'd end up super disappointed in an entire cast of cardboard "people," but that's not what happened.
I'm actually excited to learn how these characters continue to develop, and I'm interested to see the decisions they make as the story progresses.

Also, the jury is still out on how I feel about Gabe. His character in particular for me is equal parts heartbreaking and infuriating.

I really wanted to like this book. I had a hard time finding the motivation to finish it. They were chapters where I was intrigued but then it fell through. I think the concept is still cool about a necromancer wielding the power of death and light.

Idk why it has kind of lower ratings because I thoroughly enjoyed it. Although I wished it was a tad shorter but the audiobook allowed me to keep my focus on
