2.75 ⭐️ I feel conflicted on this low rating because the writing is skilled and the plot was interesting on paper, but I couldn’t find any investment. I liked the FMC but her connection to the “love interests” wasn’t developed enough to make me care about the outcome. Something just didn’t quite work but could be a case of “it’s not you, it’s me.”

This book reads almost like a prequel to what shapes to be an incredible trilogy. The magic system is unique, grounded in religious trauma and addiction. The characters are interesting and spin on the insta-love trope. Lore is a complicated person who is confident in what she knows, but gets thrust into a world she has no idea how to navigate, taking the reader along with her as she tries to puzzle out the secrets of the Citadel and the religion she’s spent her life mostly indifferent to.

This book is giving mystery under a gothic aesthetic with plant-you-into-the -world detail. It is beautiful — but slow.  It doesn’t feel like the plot truly starts until the end when all the knots start unraveling and true intentions are revealed. It is the perfect read for anyone who likes a stubborn and slightly morally grey FMC coping with anxiety and necromancy, often simultaneously.  I am very excited to see where it leads,
ideally with Bastian and Lore taking over the world (benevolently… probably)

Oh my goodness what a fantastic start to a series.

I loved the premise. It combined so many of my favourite elements in a fantasy, including a court system, a range of gods, and an intricate religious system. It was such an engaging approach, seeing these elements with the necromancy weaved in, it felt like a unique take.

I also loved how layered the plot was, and the foreshadowing throughout was excellent. I had a few genuine surprises which kept me turning pages furiously.

Also, it’s possible this might be one of my favourite executions of a love triangle. Such an incredibly slow burn and masterfully drawn out dynamics.

Loved this one, can’t wait to read the next in the series.
