Read for a new book club I joined focusing on expanding reading authors from different countries each month, first being South Africa.

I really liked the premise of getting an animal after commiting a crime. The mystery that followed was unexpected and definitely had some less than savory elements weaved in that made for a rich, but dark story.

Neither the world building (that criminals have animals) nor the mystery element (the missing person) gripped me. I also didn't love any of the characters. Mostly it just let me down (didn't live up to the interesting premise the blurb promises), and I found it a little boring.
