It was good, but I'm super confused. I thought that the picture books and the chapter books were complements to each other? But this book just completely changes from the novels.

GOLLY, that was one heck of an ending.

Was it worth the three years of waiting? Sure. If only for the constant fangirling I went through while reading this.

Two small things that I wish could have been different.

-There was SO MUCH EXPOSITION in this book. SO MUCH. I personally don’t mind reading super-long explanations of characters’ pasts, but even this was a bit too much. Literally, half the book was storytelling. Just a warning there.
-From what I had understood, this book series and Rise of the Guardians were set in the same universe. But . . . after finishing this book, I’m not sure how that works. Jack’s origin story was somewhat different here. However, I still love the book series and the movie.

If you need any motivation to read this series, I will just say this: JACK FROST IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST. ;)

First of all: I'm aware of the fact that Jack Frost in the movie and Jack Frost in the books are quite different and don't share the same background story. I went into the book expecting to get to know a new Jack Frost and I was really looking forward to it, but unfortunately I didn't love this much as much as I wanted to.

The time skip at the beginning was so confusing, but the flashbacks were even more weird. They didn't felt like they'd belonged to the whole story. The whole magic of the previous books was missing and I didn't get that wholesome feeling while reading until the last two pages. The last two pages are btw the reason why I gave this book 3 instead of 2 stars.

Also, the pacing wasn't something I really liked. The whole book was a huge built-up for the final battle and I know that it's a childrens book, so no violence, but I actually expected a bit more... (the fight in the 3rd book was great for instance)
SpoilerIt was especially frustrating, because the book has about 360 pages and the real "fight" started about at page 355 and it wasn't even a fight. Jack stabbed his own wound, that is connected to Pitch's heart; Pitch collapsed and Jack absorbed his dark side. I mean, it was nice to see this little redemption, but I wished for more.

If you just started reading this and you’re asking yourself, “uhm did I miss something?” Don’t be concerned. This is, in fact, the fifth book. You didn’t skip anything... unless you thought this was the third, fourth, or even first book.... if that’s the case then, yes, you missed a few steps. Otherwise, just stick it out and it’ll all make sense, I promise. There’s a thrilling conclusion and heartwarming ending waiting for you!

This is a sweet book, except that it doesn't work with the movie canon, and I liked the idea that he was a human boy. Maybe Nightlight reborn into human form and then returning to guardian-hood. Also, Mannie is even more of a dick for leaving Jack alone if Jack is Nightlight. This is your best friend and bodyguard! ugh.
