I absolutely loved this and it was the perfect read for a winter's day.
It read like a fairytale so had me hooked straight away. Set in Westeros, the ice dragon is a creature of legend, no one had ever tamed or ridden one. They leave a frozen land in their wake.
Our heroine, Adara, is a child of winter. 'The winter had touched her, left its mark upon her, and made her its own.' One day when she was 4years old she sees the ice dragon for the first time. It visits her every winter and they form a beautiful bond, and rides it for the first time when she is 5. When she is 7 years old raiders from the north attack with their fire breathing dragons and Adara's way of life is at risk.
Beautifully written, whimsical and magical. Though aimed at a younger audience, it does contain some darker themes. A story of friendship, love, sacrifice and family. The ending also made me cry and the illustrations are stunning.
