Another stellar book in the series! Midnight blue feathers and starry constellation eyes? sign me the fuck up. It doesn't hurt that our 'birdman' Dakas was very sweet and an empath.

I enjoyed Luana a lot - a latina woman yearning for knowledge and the opportunity to learn and grow beyond what her backwater colony allows. Some times coming off as timid but actually being kickass and having the emotional and mental strength to take on an absurd sequence of events. I really appreciated that her kickassery was paired with a softer side and compassion and that the story acknowledges that she Went Through Some Shit and Needed An Emotional Release, ya'll.

There wasn't quite as much cool stuff about the planet and species in this one due to covering a third species. Instead, there was slightly more emphasis on political machinations both locally and galactically. It was interesting hearing about the specific rules around sharing technology with species that haven't achieved interstellar travel (and the loopholes the UPO and our beloved OG birdman Kayog finds to get around them).

I'm really enjoying these series. Short and well-developed, immediately we dive in to a plausible story with amazing plot.  Similar appeal within each book but drastically different setting which is really nice.

i think regina abel is a talented writer. this series of hers is truly fascinating to me and the way each book in the series is so different to one another is a testament to her talent.

i enjoyed this book. i loved both daka and luana. they had mutual respect for another which then grew into real love. however, the only thing i didn’t like so much was the politics in it. nothing against the author of course but wars are just not my thing.
