would like to come back to this with a clear mind that can really grasp the subject matter, started and it is really clearly a very important read and i want to give this clear and undivided attention and think it through in a studied fashion.

This has some fascinating insights or analyses at points, but most of the book reads like a dissertation. It's very theoretical and dense, especially since I don't have much familiarity with the books or music mentioned. I just don't think I'm at a place right now where I can give this book the attention it deserves or fall into its intended audience and that's okay.
I'm flagging Black Madness :: Mad Blackness by Theri Alyce Pickens for myself as a book that deals with a similar subject, maybe more approachably, maybe not—but potentially worth checking out before deciding whether or not to come back to this one. Kinda sad honestly, I was really anticipating this and asked my local library to buy a copy, but it feels so hefty.
