Main characters were super annoying, they didn’t even have good rapport that was witty, they were just annoyed with each other.

A enthralling read- the beginning is a little hard to get into, but it takes off from there. The setting is very unique- a steam punk society set in the future on another planet. World building is a bit shaky at the beginning, but it all comes together. This was a good read overall, and I am looking forward to picking up the sequel!
I really enjoyed how unique this was - the blend of fantasy with sci-fi aspects was really cool! I loved the characters, just wished we would find out a little more about them. Saying that the book seemed to drag at times and the world building was harder to comprehend here and there. Overall, I am excited where the next book is going!
Maybe I let the constant Instagram ads get to me, but I expected Cities of Smoke and Starlight to be more exciting than it actually was. It wasn’t bad—there were parts I liked—but the pacing felt off, and at times, it was a struggle to get through. Good enough, but not enough to keep me reading the series.

Think “The Mummy” but Sci-Fi. Slow burn love interest/bickering. It started picking up about half way through the book. I struggled getting through the first portion. Felt like there could have been more character development, however, this is only the first book and there’s plenty of room to grow in the next books.

objectively well-written, but not for me
This book took me a REALLY long time to get through. I read a lot of other books while trying to read this one because it just didn’t grab my interest. The plot felt slow moving and I didn’t really understand the point of what they were doing (probably my fault with how long I took to read it). The last 100 pages were engaging but if you like romance novels it was barely in this book. The world building was interesting enough that I’ll probably read the second one, but this really wasn’t a novel for me. Author forgive me because it’s not your fault I read a book that wasn’t my cup of tea!
