Trent is a deeply unlikeable character, and I never got the chance to truly care for him, but I cared about Rita and Milo, and the themes of toxic masculinity and the insidious nature of capitalist chauvinism is captured brilliantly in this novel. Also, there are phenomenal moments of body horror, especially with homeware appliances and power tools.
Graphic: Animal cruelty, Animal death, Body horror, Body shaming, Bullying, Child abuse, Cursing, Death, Domestic abuse, Emotional abuse, Gore, Mental illness, Misogyny, Physical abuse, Sexism, Toxic relationship, Violence, Blood, Medical content, Grief, Medical trauma, Death of parent, Schizophrenia/Psychosis , Gaslighting, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Ableism, Confinement, Racial slurs, Racism, Sexual content, Sexual violence, Suicidal thoughts, Torture, Death of parent, Pregnancy, Fire/Fire injury, and Abandonment
Minor: Xenophobia, Vomit, and Alcohol
Be aware that this novel deals with toxic masculinity, ritual cults and sacrifices, child as easy targets for eldritch abominations, violence with tools and appliances, emasculation, workplace violence, trauma from the destruction of a sibling’s mental capacities, and the dissolution of the nuclear family.
