such a beautiful book. i really fell in love with eleanor and i really felt for her. at first i didn’t like her but throughout the novel my heart melted like ice.  eleanor is completely funny, realistic, and honest. i have a few problems within the inconsistencies of the book such as the ending/plot twist, the lack of detail towards certain events, and i felt like some topics could’ve been explored more deeply or atleast get some what of more than surface level exploration. i loved that this book really made an emphasis on the importantance of friendship and how kindness can truly change people’s lives. i didn’t expect this book to be a 4.5 stars but it did blow me away and i found myself laughing, teary-eyed, and full of utter enjoyment. ‘twas a good read and a lovely experience ☺️💞

Reading this book in 2020, one of if not the loneliest year of my life, was certainly an experience.

I found its descriptions of loneliness well done and thoughtful. It captures the competing desires of connection and total self-sufficiently well. While some aspects of the story felt predictable, there were quite a few twists and turns that I hadn't been expecting which kept me engaged throughout the story. The ending was unexpected in a satisfying way and the climax was incredibly cathartic. The main characters are incredibly sympathetic and sweet.

My one issue (and this is definitely a me thing) was that this book was marketed as "funny." The paperback copy of the book I own has so many reviews that describe it as "incredibly funny" (quoth Reese Witherspoon herself), which was one of the main reasons I wanted to read it so much. I had expected a light-hearted story about a socially awkward woman, not a story about loneliness and deeply repressed childhood trauma!

So as much as I enjoyed a lot about this story, I didn't find it funny at all. I felt secondhand embarrassment during all of Eleanor's social faux pas and my heart broke uncovering her backstory. The secondary characters were sweet, but I wouldn't call this book a funny book. But maybe my social anxiety is as such that I can't help but over empathize with characters in awkward social situations.

Interesting trying to figure out what’s up with Eleanor, and the way she views the world is very different from your avarage woman.
