A huge thank you to Damir for allowing me to read and review Always Beside You.

Synopsis:

Nick Cater finds himself dropping everything to help a woman he hasn’t given a second thought to in 8 years. A dream, then a visitor from a stranger putting him onto this path is too much of a coincidence. Meanwhile Thomas Elbert, a murderer, escapes prison and stirs up memories for detective Alec Palmer. However, more questions are also stirred up when Thomas then commits suicide, why would he wake up from the trance he has been in, escape prison, only to kill himself? Was this in fact murder? Is there a connection to Nate Cater who is now on the run with a daughter he didn’t know he had? Their search for answers soon has them brought into a dark, parallel world with alternate realities. Where the doors open into other times and other worlds, where dreams won’t be denied.
By the time they realise they are pawns in a much bigger game, the fate of the world is at stake.

Review:
Supernatural reads are not usually a genre I would go to, however when I am asked to write a review, I will always do my best to give it a go. Therefore, I really did not know what to expect with this read and if I would connect. Both the cover and description did have my curiosity piqued and the star rating also looked promising, however I decided I would go in blind for this one and I was eager to find out if this would be a supernatural for me.
Unfortunately, however, I did find it quite difficult to connect with this read. I honestly found myself a little lost in places and it was a struggle diving back into the story, there was too much for me to get my head around but I honestly think this is due to the kind of reader I am, not the authors writing! Things began to become a little unbelievable for me at times and I did generally struggle to connect with the characters as there were quite a lot for me to get my head round and to understand. I also think the flashbacks could have been clearer and when people were experiencing dreams as I think this would have been less confusing for people who are quite particular like me.
However, this review isn’t all bad! I do generally believe that if you like your supernatural thrillers this could be for you, especially if you like horror and detective crime series as well as the author does a fantastic job at crossing over these genres.
The author is very good at creating atmospheres and some scenes did have me pulled in as a result of this. There is plenty to sink your teeth into and many twists and turns along the way that also keep you on your toes. One thing Always Beside You did show me is that the author is a very talented writer.

There is a lot going on in this book and parts of it reminded me a bit of Firestarter, but with more supernatural meat on it's bones and less sci fi. The characters are complex and Nate especially has been through the wringer of changes from a drug addicted past to unlikely hero. Lifting the veil between worlds may sound like the quickest path to wealth, power, and all that your heart desires but there is a heavy price to pay and the debt is past due. Some doors are locked for a reason. Don't open them if you don't know what's on the other side!
