This book really sucked me in for many hundreds of pages and I wish the next one was out already. A slow start and some very slow world building but the characters are strong and the tension is well done.

Though the book starts out with *A LOT* of world-building, these complex pieces fall into place to create a really beautiful, new world. The magic system, creatures and realms of the Burn, the Fade and the Shade make for a really intriguing and creative backdrop for this character-driven story. I think there are a lot of different parts of this world to explore throughout the series.

I enjoyed the character growth and occasional other POVs to break up the story. Personally, I am always down for a badass FMC with emotional baggage. My only gripe with this book is an overuse of the “forgotten past” trope. I definitely got lost a few times trying to keep up with what I was supposed to understand already vs. was supposed pick up as I go. You don’t end the book knowing how everything fits together exactly. I found it annoying that Raeve seems to know things that the reader doesn’t get any insight into which is frustrating and strange in a first person POV.

SPOILERS !
I understand how Raeve needed to evolve through her grief to remember her past. I think the character has legitimate reasons to push things away rather than reckon with them, and generally enjoyed piecing her identity back together as she learned to be more vulnerable. HOWEVER I do not understand how one character has THREE separate histories that the reader knows nothing about. I am leaving book 1 with more questions than answers. Who the hell is Fallon? What is the Other and where did it come from? I am going to have to google if we found out what her dragonflame healing was from because I don’t know if I missed it or if this also a secret at this point in the story?

I will definitely read book 2 when it comes out, excited to discover more pieces to the puzzle about Raeve’s past and their implications on her future.

From the first page I had the feeling this book did not go through a rigorous editing process. I struggled for TWO WEEKS until I just couldn’t go on. There is no plot. The voice is inconsistent. The premise of the world that is what got me so excited literally doesn’t go anywhere. The dragons exist but do nothing. I can’t believe I read 566 pages before quitting.

Um, hello. What just happened? This is my first Sarah A. Parker book, and honestly — incredible. It’s super dense, information wise, and I feel like we’ve barely scraped the surface on what is going on. Like, after over 700 pages we’ve barely set the stage to what is a gigantic political twisty knot of chaos. As a character, Raeve is much of the same — she’s literally got layers to her body and past that we don’t know about. Hopefully book two will explore much of that, because while I don’t mind the occasional hints, I hope we finally get the full picture in the next book so that we can start moving forward with a solid goal. This world is super unique, and I think the concept of the dragons and what happens when they die is incredible. Kaan is a giant hunk of yum, and I look forward to more of him and Raeve.
Preferably with more cock and less manhood 🫠🥴 lmao.
A reread before the next book will absolutely be necessary as will a physical copy, because I will need to mark shit up and have easier access to the glossary.

Enjoyed the first half but the second half got so trope-y it lost me, and it was so long I didn’t want to power through. A LOT could have been edited out. Also, I am begging fantasy authors, please stop making up words purely for the sake of it. If an animal is functionally a cow, you can call it a cow. I promise it won’t take away from the world building. Or a day. Or mother and father. Or morning and evening. The story takes place across multiple years (I THINK??) but I didn’t want to keep going back to the glossary to translate words, which is the only place anything is given context, so I never had a clear sense of how much time was passing. I’m pretty sure she was hiding behind a wall for 10 hours but it also could have been 10 days. I really couldn’t tell you.

4.25 stars. Now this is some adult, high romantasy. You know the book will be tough when it starts with a 7-page glossary explaining who all the characters are, what all the creatures are, and all the places. That being said, it was hard to follow but simultaneously very immersive since it was not like any other world I have "been" in. I see why people are complaining about the high fantasy language immediately being followed up with by the FMC saying fuck or telling a POS that they have a micropenis, but hey, it worked for me. I will pick up the second one, but I might have to skim this again to remember all that went on since I know this book was almost entirely setting up the plot for the next book.

*** the animal cruelty TW is for a fictional dragonlike character that is abused but does not die.

I loved this book, however to put it simply it was a lot of drawn out and I understand nothing of what is actually going on. Which makes me want book to like yesterday. I cannot wait to see where she takes the story next.
